Sports Videography Is About Following the Game
A sports video should allow the viewer to follow the action without wondering where the ball, puck or athlete has gone.
One of the most common mistakes in amateur sports videography is concentrating too closely on one player. When the play changes direction, the camera operator loses the ball and struggles to find the action again.
The viewer should experience the flow of the game, not the movement of the camera.
This requires:
- An appropriate camera position
- A stable tripod
- A practical focal length
- Smooth panning and tilting
- Sufficient space around the action
- Reliable focus and exposure
- Continuous monitoring
- Backup recording when possible
The right setup depends on the size of the field, the speed of the sport and the distance between the camera and the athletes.

Four-Day Hockey Tournament Coverage Featured Sports Production
One of our most technically demanding sports projects was a four-day hockey tournament in Abbotsford.
The filming position was located above the rink. Unlike many soccer fields, where the camera mainly follows the action horizontally, hockey coverage from an elevated position requires both panning and tilting.
Players could move directly underneath the camera position, which created a challenge. A conventional tripod setup could not tilt far enough to maintain a useful view of the action near the boards below.
The video also needed to be sent to OBS and broadcast live on YouTube with commentary.
To solve the positioning problem, we installed a rail system on the tripod and placed a gimbal on the extended section. This allowed the camera to move beyond the edge of the platform and look more directly toward the area below.
A joystick connected to the gimbal gave us remote control of camera movement. By using an appropriately wide composition, we could cover the rink while reducing the possibility of losing fast-moving players or the puck.
The camera feed was then sent to OBS, combined with the live commentary and broadcast online.
The project demonstrated that sports videography is not only about operating the camera. The physical camera position, control system, live-production workflow and backup plan all need to work together.

Our Process From Pre-Game Planning to Final Delivery
We determine the sport, level of competition and purpose of the video.
A full match, player recruitment video, coaching review and social media highlight require different coverage.
We assess the field, rink, pool or court and identify the best available camera position.
Important considerations include:
- Height and distance from the action
- Access to spectator or media areas
- Available power
- Lighting conditions
- Camera safety
- Internet access for streaming
- Restrictions set by the venue
The focal length is selected according to the venue and filming position.
A camera close to a soccer field may use a wider focal length, while an elevated or distant position may require a longer lens.
The tripod, monitor, recording format, focus, frame rate, shutter speed and memory-card configuration are checked before the game begins.
The camera follows the action using controlled movement and enough visual space to prevent the ball or athlete from leaving the frame unexpectedly.
The footage is organized and reviewed. Depending on the package, editing may include highlights, titles, scores, player identification, slow motion, music and sound design.
Videos are exported for full-game viewing, coaching, recruitment, websites, YouTube or social media.
The footage is organized and edited with appropriate pacing, colour correction, graphics, captions, transitions, sound effects and music.
The video is reviewed with the client and exported in the required ratios and formats.
Full Match or Athlete-Focused Coverage?
Full-Match Recording
Full-match coverage prioritizes the overall flow of the game.
The framing remains wide enough to show the action and its surrounding context. This format is useful for coaches, teams, families, archives and game analysis.
Athlete Highlight Coverage
Athlete-focused filming follows one player more closely and may include warm-ups, reactions, technical movements and important plays.
A strong highlight video normally combines game footage with closer B-roll and selected moments from multiple matches or training sessions. These highlights are commonly edited for social media video content.
The Combined Option
When budget and venue conditions allow, one camera can record the full game while another captures closer athlete-focused footage.
This creates both dependable match coverage and more engaging material for highlights and social media.
Why Excessive Zooming Can Ruin Sports Footage
Frequent zooming is one of the most common problems in beginner sports videos.
When the camera is tightly zoomed on one player and the ball suddenly moves across the field, the camera operator may lose the action. The viewer then sees the camera searching for the play.
For single-camera coverage, it is usually safer to film slightly wider and maintain a consistent focal length.
If the video is recorded in 4K and delivered at a lower resolution, selected moments can often be cropped or digitally reframed during editing.
Large professional broadcasts can use tighter camera angles because several camera operators and a live switcher are working together. If one camera loses the action, another camera can immediately take over.
A single-camera production does not have that protection. The framing needs to be practical and dependable.
A Useful Framing Guideline
Players should be large enough to remain recognizable but not so large that the wider play disappears.
Depending on the sport and production goal, an athlete may occupy approximately one-fifth to one-half of the frame height. Full-game coverage normally stays toward the wider end of that range.
Focus Settings for Large Fields
Continuous autofocus is not always the best option for sports coverage.
On a large field, the camera may struggle to decide whether it should focus on a closer player, a distant player or another object entering the frame. This can cause visible focus hunting.
For wide coverage from a fixed position, manual focus may provide a more consistent result.
We can focus on a practical middle distance and select an aperture that provides enough depth of field to keep the main playing area acceptably sharp.
If autofocus is required, a controlled focus area near the centre of the frame is often more dependable than allowing the camera to select subjects across the entire image.
The correct approach depends on the camera, lens, lighting and distance from the action.
The Challenge of Swimming Videography
Swimming is one of the most challenging sports to film creatively.
For more dynamic footage, the camera may need to be close to the water or inside the pool. A waterproof housing is required when the camera enters the water or works in an area exposed to significant splashes.
A useful creative angle may show part of the swimmer below the surface and part above it. This requires careful positioning, suitable housing and controlled movement.
Indoor pools introduce additional difficulties.
Artificial lights can reflect across the surface and create distracting highlights. Adding more lights can sometimes make those reflections worse.
When possible, we use available natural light and choose camera positions that reduce glare. Exposure and angle are adjusted around both the swimmer and the reflective surface of the water.
Even when the camera remains outside the pool, it needs protection from splashes and moisture.
Coverage Designed for Each Sport
Field Sports
Sports such as soccer require a wide and stable view that allows the audience to see the ball, nearby players and developing movement.
The camera generally follows the action through controlled horizontal panning. The focal length depends on the distance between the camera and the field.
Rink Sports
Hockey is faster and often filmed from an elevated position. The camera needs to respond quickly while maintaining enough width to keep the puck and surrounding players visible.
Both horizontal and vertical movement may be necessary.
Court Sports
Tennis and volleyball require predictable framing around a smaller playing area. A wide master camera can record the complete match while a secondary camera captures tighter player reactions or technical details.
Swimming
Swimming requires careful consideration of reflections, splashes, camera protection and the relationship between what happens above and below the water.
Each environment needs a different approach. A setup that works for soccer may not work for hockey or swimming.
How Our Sports Coverage Has Evolved
Our early soccer videos taught us that reliable sports coverage depends more on preparation than constant camera adjustment.
Over time, our workflow changed in several important ways:
- We reduced unnecessary zooming
- We improved focus selection for large playing areas
- We added external monitoring
- We began recording to two memory cards
- We selected focal lengths based on the full field of play
- We improved frame-rate and shutter-speed settings
- We planned camera positions before the game
- We built more reliable live-production workflows
- We combined full-game coverage with creative B-roll when appropriate
The objective is not to make the camera movement noticeable. It is to let the viewer follow the game without interruption.
Camera Settings for Sports Coverage
Sports generally need a faster frame rate and shutter speed than slow cinematic scenes.
For footage recorded at 60 frames per second, a shutter speed around 1/120 is a useful starting point. This creates clearer movement and provides the option to use selected moments in slow motion.
For longer full-game recordings where file size is a concern, the codec, bitrate and resolution can be adjusted without sacrificing the reliability of the recording.
Exposure settings also need to respond to the environment.
Outdoor light can change as clouds move across the field. Automatic ISO may help maintain exposure while the important motion settings remain controlled. Auto white balance can be practical in rapidly changing conditions, although a fixed white balance may produce more consistent colour when the lighting remains stable.
Before every game, we check:
- Frame rate
- Shutter speed
- Resolution
- Recording format
- Exposure
- White balance
- Focus
- Audio
- Available storage
- Battery and power
- Recording indicators
External Monitoring Improves Accuracy
A small camera screen can make it difficult to judge focus and framing, especially when athletes are far away. An external monitor provides a larger view of the field and helps the camera operator identify:
- Focus problems
- Exposure changes
- Recording interruptions
- Players leaving the frame
- Small distracting elements
- Remaining battery and recording time
External monitoring has become an important part of our sports production workflow, particularly for soccer and other large-field sports.
Similar production techniques are also used across our other Videography Services.
Recording to Two Memory Cards
Sports events cannot always be repeated.
A memory-card failure during a match can result in the loss of an important section of the game. After experiencing a card failure during an earlier production, we changed our workflow.
When the camera supports it, we record simultaneously to two memory cards. Dual-card recording creates an immediate backup and reduces the risk of losing the only copy of an important match, performance or athlete moment.

The Best Sports Video Keeps You Inside the Game
A sports video should not distract the viewer with unstable framing, constant zooming or inconsistent focus.
It should make the action easy to follow, preserve important moments and deliver the type of footage the athlete, team, coach or audience actually needs.
That requires a clear production goal, a practical camera position and a filming technique designed for the sport.
